A great role or a flexible one? You can have both.

Do you believe having an amazing job that you can also do flexibly is too much to expect? That it’s like searching for a needle in an impossibly large haystack?

For a long time this was close enough to the truth. And it may have led you to stay in roles that were:

  • exciting and fulfilling, but required way more hours than you could sustainably manage; or,

  • very flexible, but completely uninspiring.

The good news is that the flexibility landscape is changing, and you can take advantage of this change, and even help drive it.

2020 has brought lots of challenges (to say the least), but one of the silver linings to come out of it will be the long lasting change in how we view the possibilities, and advantages, of flexible work.

The future of work is flexible

We are at the beginning of a huge shift in the flexible work landscape. So I prefer to think of finding a great part-time role as like running a middle-distance race, vs a sprint.

It requires a bit more endurance, but with the right training and tools, a strong knowledge of the landscape in which you’re competing, and a good dose of conviction, it is very achievable.

Finding a great flexible role

Tools (for finding and crafting flexible roles) + Knowledge (of flex work landscape) + Conviction (that flexible work is a win:win for employees and employers) = Success

Where to start

You’ve probably heard the old sales adage ‘the first sale is to yourself’. If you’re not already across all the reasons that flexible work is great for organisations as well as for employees, then I recommend you start with conviction. Once you’re personally convinced, it will make discussions about about flexible working with your (current or prospective) employer so much more effective.
