Feeling Stuck in Your Flexible Role
Welcome to another Flexible Success newsletter. Each edition includes a tip, a quote, a question and an interesting read - all related to part-time and flexible work. It's designed to be quick and easy to digest, and to provide you with some food for thought for the week ahead.
Theme: Feeling Stuck in Your Role
A TIP
I talk to lots of people in flexible and part-time roles who feel stuck. They've outgrown their current role, but think there's no point looking for a new job because it will be next to impossible to find the same flexibility elsewhere.
This used to be a fairly accurate assessment of the job search landscape - not many roles were advertised as flexible. But the good news is that attitudes to flexible work are changing. This was already happening slowly, but 2020 certainly sped up the pace of change.
To move into a new flexible or part-time role, the key is finding a supportive organisation (and ideally a supportive hiring manager within this organisation). Plenty of organisations are becoming more supportive of flexible work, and actually advertising roles as flexible.
So if you're ready for a change, don't give up before you even start. Keep an open mind and take a look at what's out there!
A QUOTE
"The two critical factors for creating a culture of flexible work are trust from managers and the ability for employees to choose how, when and where they work." ― Stephanie Reuss, CEO, Beam Australia
A QUESTION
If you're looking for a new flexible role, have you considered identifying and targeting organisations who explicitly support and promote flexible work?
AN INTERESTING READ
If you're in Australia, two great places to find employers with great flexibility policies and practices are Work180's endorsed employer list and Beam's Flex Leaders list.
For readers in the UK, Timewise's list of recruiters is an excellent resource.
All three of these organisations also have job boards advertising part-time and flexible roles.
